Mentor a young woman in jail? Who me?
Have you ever felt a nudge to do something that seemed beyond your skills, talents, gifts? Then you know how I felt in this moment.
How can I help bring change here?
What do I know about this struggle? The inner struggle wrestles, trying to push me away from taking a brave step and instead be held back by fear.
I wonder if Sheerah, whose story is told in 1 Chronicles 7:20-24, wrestling with fear before she took her brave step too. She also would have been a woman without the skills needed to accomplish her task.
Before Sheerah’s birth, tragedy struck her family of nomadic herdsmen; two of her brothers were murdered. If only there had been city walls instead of flimsy tent flaps, her family may have been protected from danger.
When hardship strikes us or those we love, we long to fix it. All too often, we simply can’t. Sheerah couldn’t change the past, but she could change the future. 1 Chronicles 7:24 tells us “His daughter was Sheerah, who built Lower and Upper Beth Horon as well as Uzzen Sheerah.”
Did you catch that? (I had to read it a couple of times myself!)
Normally when you put together: a woman + a family of boys + herdsmen, it does not equal engineer. But Sheerah took a new step: from agriculture to architecture. This woman built a city; actually three. She stepped up and gave her family a safe place to live. And when she did, God was there to help just as Isaiah 41:10 says “fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (ESV)
Like Sheerah, right now, I don’t have the skills or wisdom I need to become a difference maker to another, just like Sheerah.
With God’s help, though, I can take small steps in the right direction to begin making a difference.
And so can you. Partnering with Karama can be that first step.
